Brownfield first responders were called to the scene of a two vehicle accident on Friday evening around 7pm. When a 2005 Chevy Silverado pick-up collided with a 2014 Chevy Cruze on the 400 block of Seagraves Hwy. A small fire was ignited in one of the vehicles and quickly extinguished, as traffic was halted in the area for over an hour. A female and two children from the Chevy Cruze were reportedly taken to the Brownfield Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. The driver of the Chevy Silverado was issued two citations.

The situation was outlined to the Commissioners’ Court at Monday morning’s meeting by two contrasting voices, Karen Grigsby, the County Treasurer and Buzz Steele, the President of the Cemetery Board. Karen Grigsby, the county treasurer spoke first, she explained that the treasurer’s office has “kept the records and housed everything for the (cemetery) association for the past 35 to 40 years.” She said that the service was offered by a past treasurer, but “it’s not a core duty of a county treasurer, it’s actually just an extra job on top of our already full time job.” She added that because of the added workload of managing the cemetery, “it has become burdensome to do our county duties that we were elected to do.” The commissioners noted that managing the cemetery has become a more time consuming task compared to 40 years ago. Precinct 3 County Commissioner Martin LeFevere mentioned that Brownfield’s population was much smaller at that time.

Superintendent Chris Smith says that he’s “excited for Mr. Garza to join the team.” Mr. Garza previously was working at Slaton ISD. Chris Smith explained that Mr. Garza has experience building relationships with students and experience with working with “special populations.” Chris Smith is confident the Mr. Garza will “bring a lot to the community.”

Beforecoming to Meadow ISD, Bentancourt worked as the Elementary Principal in Anton ISD forfive years. Mrs. Bentancourt graduated from Texas Tech University in 1997 with a Bachelor ofScience degree in Agriculture Communications. She obtained her Master’s Degree inAgricultural Education from Texas A&M in 1999. Mrs. Bentancourt received her Master’sDegree in Educational Administration from Lubbock Christian University in 2012. Superintendent Bric Turner said, “We are pleased to add Dee Anne Bentancourt to our administrative staff as the new Principal of Burleson Elementary. She has excellent academic credentials as well as experience coordinating outstanding UIL academic teams.Her experience in and love of small schools will inspire the students and teachers of-Burleson Elementary.”
