When Mike was two years old the family moved to Brownfield. Mike went to school in Brownfield and graduated from Brownfield High School in 1970. He then went to South Plains College in Levelland. In 1971 Mike joined the U.S. Army and proudly served in Germany from 1971 to 1974. After he was released from the Army, he moved back to Lubbock where he met Linda Messall and they got married on October 26, 1974.
