The family of Gerald Ward celebrated his life of 80 years on Monday, February 22, 2021, at First Baptist Church in Ropesville, Texas. He passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021. On December 27, 1940, Gerald was born to Charlie and Ella Mae Ward in Ropesville, Texas on the Ward Homestead farm. He graduated from Ropes High School in 1959, where he enjoyed playing football and running track making an appearance at the state meet in the sprint relay. (We’ve been told the team stayed up too late the night before and didn’t exactly have their legs the next day!) Gerald followed in his father’s footsteps and began farming in 1960 and continued plowing some of the straightest, cleanest rows in the county for 61 years—without a GPS! Gerald was known for his numerous cars (Sandra says he got a new one each year), motorcycles, riding bareback broncs, deer hunting, and playing dominoes. He met his bride, Nona Genell Cornett, in Brownfield in the VA parking lot while they were each on a double date (not with each other)! They married on February 23, 1963 at the Baptist Church in Union. Gerald served as the greeter passing out the weekly bulletin and “charging” $1 each to increase the coffer for FBC Ropesville for the past 16 years. Never having met a stranger, he was a friend to all and loved a good laugh. Survivors include his wife, Genell Ward; their children, Julee (Rick) Reardon, Jill (Rick) Teran; grandchildren, Lindsey (Brennen) LeFevre, Charlie (Ashleigh) Abram, and Landry Teran; greatgrandchildren, Kolton Abram; and sister, Sandra Ayers. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Charlene Sims. The family has designated the Ropesville First Baptist Church for memorial contributions donated in Gerald’s memory.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of David Auburg on February 18, 2021. David Earl Auburg was born March 23, 1946 to the late Marshall and Betty Auburg in Brownfield, TX. David graduated from Brownfield High School in 1964 and Angelo State in 1969 where he played football. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Stice August 24, 1968. After graduating Angelo State he and Janice returned to Brownfield where he farmed and attended First United Methodist Church for the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife Janice, his son Lance David Auburg, and wife Cenny, of Frisco; daughter Angela Wood Carr, and husband Matt of Lubbock; his favorite thing was being Papa to his six grandkids Austin, Anderson, Lauren, Gracie, Mason and Allie. He was a humble, loving man always showing a strong willed devotion to his family and work. He was preceded in death by his father Marshall when he was age 9, Darrell P. Lewis, his mother Betty Lewis and brother Danny Lewis. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Gladys Stice Franks, brother-in-law Harry Stice and sister-in-law Sandra Beyer and sister Jeanann Forbes. Services for David were held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 23rd at First United Methodist Church Brownfield, Tx. In support of everyone attending, please follow social distancing guidelines and wear a face covering (mandatory). A private family burial will be held. Memorial contributions in David’s memory are suggested to First United Methodist Church of Brownfield or to your favorite charity.

Benjamin “B.J.” Nereck IV passed away on February 13, 2021 in Brownfield. He was born on May 20, 1985 in San Diego, CA to Benjamin J. III and Doneda Nereck. He graduated from Kensington High School in 2003. B.J. was always there for everyone and would give you the shirt off his back. He was a loving son and a hard worker. B.J. is preceded in death by his brother Jason Hudgins. B.J. is survived by his parents, Benjamin and Doneda Nereck. Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Cargile officiating.

Salome DeLaRosa-Estrada, 70 of Brownfield passed on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Salome was born October 1, 1950 in Fort Hood, Texas to the late Salome De- LaRosa and Ester Robles. Salome known as “Nina” was fun, loving, and met no stranger. Salome loved her family and was a fighter until the end. She genuinely enjoyed spending time in her garden, playing word search, figuring out her puzzle pieces, and was a jokester. Salome is preceded in death by her parents; Salome and Ester DeLaRosa, brother; Mario DeLaRosa, and sisters; Mary Garcia, Dolores DeLaRosa, and Natividad DeLaRosa. She leaves to cherish her fondest memory, her children Mary K. Gonzales, Pedro “Jr” Estrada, and Ester C. Estrada, 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren soon to come. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at Living Hope Foursquare Church, 601 Lubbock Rd. Brownfield, TX. We celebrate the life of Harold Dewey Hendricks, born February 12, 1940, in Brownfield, TX, the son of CL and Amy Hendricks. Harold grew up in Brownfield where he attended school and was a BHS 1960 graduate. He received recognition at South Plains College for “outstanding service” to the publication of the Plainsman Press. He was also a member of the Distributive Education and TOPPERS clubs. Harold worked alongside his father in a family carpentry and painting business. He will be remembered for his dedicated service to the Terry County Senior Community Center. Harold was a faithful member of Living Hope Foursquare Church, where he served as an elder and church council member. Harold has been a lifelong servant of His Lord Jesus Christ. He faithfully served his friends, church, and community. He is remembered as a prayerful man of God and for his loving and gentle spirit. Harold was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his cousins Betty and Richard Farley of Lodi, CA. Harold went home to be with His Savior Jesus Christ on February 12, 2021.
