Wyatt Retires as Lady Cubs’ Head Basketball Coach

After seven seasons at the helm of the Lady Cubs team, Brownfield Girl’s Head Basketball Coach Michelle Wyatt retired last week. Wyatt spent nine years at Brownfield in total with seven of them as Head Coach of the Lady Cubs. Wyatt saw much success with the Lady Cubs and even brought a State Championship back to Brownfield in 2021. Wyatt had a long and storied career before transitioning to Head Coach of the Lady Cubs as part of the South Plains Lady Texans’ coaching staff for 16 seasons, with 10 of those as Head Coach. Wyatt began her coaching career as an assistant at Wayland Baptist University three years earlier under Coach Johnna Pointer.

Homeland Security Performs Sting Operation on Brownfield Resident

Brownfield local Joel Benjamin Kenady was arrested Thursday in Brownfield on E Cardwell St on Federal Charges after being accused of sexual exploitation of a 12-year-old girl from Corpus Christi, according to court records. Homeland Security Investigations conducted a sting operation early Thursday morning at Kenady’s home. According to federal court documents, Kenady was charged with Coercion and Enticement of a Minor and Sexual Exploitation of a minor.

BHS One-Act Receives Several Awards at District Competition

The Brownfield One-Act Play competed in the district competition last Wednesday in Denver City. Despite not advancing, The BHS One-Act Play team received several awards, including Alternate Play, which was “Distance” by Jerry Dye. Christian Falcon and Katie Richards received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, Lauriss Ross received All-Star Cast and Mike Rodriguez received Best Tech.

Castaneda to Represent Broncos at State Powerlifting Meet

A pair of Broncos traveled to Brownfield Thursday to compete in the Region 1 Divison 4 Powerlifting Meet. Eddie Garcia finished ninth out of 12 lifters with a total of 875 pounds. Logan Castaneda qualified for the State Powerlifting Meet after placing first with more than 200 pounds to his total than the second place finisher.

One Cubs Headed to State Powerlifting Meet

The Brownfield Powerlifting team competed at home in the Region 1 Division 3 Powerlifting Meet on Saturday. The Cubs had four lifters compete and all of them medal at the meet with one of them qualifying for the State Powerlift-ing Meet. Austin Ferriera will represent the Cubs at the State Powerlifting Meet after securing a qualifying total in the 220-pound weight class with a total weight of 1,450 pounds for all three lifts. Ferriera also tied the bench press record in his weight class.

Wellman-Union Announces Middle School and High School Cheer Teams

Following tryouts, the Wellman-Union cheerleading team announced their Junior High and High School Cheerleading teams. The Junior High Cheerleading team included Macey Arendall, Quincy Baker, Ansley Brown, Leigha Guzman, Steeli Horrell, Aleigha Liberto, Tenley Martin, Sophia Martinez, Hailey Navarro and Halli Worley. The High School Varsity Cheerleading team included, Jerzee Harlan, Azayla Mercado, Emalyn Navarro, Meghan Seymore, Sayge Wise, Zoye Wise and Mascot Alyssa Cavazos.
