AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is encouraging everyone to end 2022 safely as they travel and spend time with family and friends this holiday season. The Texas Highway Patrol will conduct its annual Christmas and New Year’s holiday traffic enforcement campaign beginning Dec. 23 and will be out on the roads looking for people who are speeding, not wearing their seat belts, driving while intoxicated or committing other traffic violations.

Both families had come west from East Texas to Haskell County and on to Terry County - in the mid teens. Along with other early 1900s seekers of more and cheaper land, blocks of native pasture land still existed on most of their 80, 160 or 320 acre farms. Horse and mule teams pulled mostly one row planters, “go-devils” (slides with long steel knives to cut weeds), cultivators and wagons for the crops of cotton, corn, maize and “bundled feed.” Human power would do the hoeing, harvesting, and the host of other “before daylight to after dark” chores.
