ODD DAY IN BASEBALL

An interesting turn of events took place in Brownfield with the Babe Ruth Baseball League. The Cubs team was set to play Seminole on Saturday, May 28. Instead The Babe Ruth Baseball League opened up with a game against Denver City. The Cubs young team did not disappoint as they matched up against the Denver City Mustangs JV team for an hour and forty five minute time limit.

Primary Election results are in

The primary election results are in. Tony Serbantez defeated Larry Gilbert in the Republican Primary for County Judge. Serbantez will run against Democrat Scott Jackson for the position in November. Angie Garza will remain Justice of the Peace after defeating David Cox.

Tornado spotted near Brownfield

It was quite the sight in Terry County when a tornado formed and touched down in a cotton field near Meadow. It captivated the attention of many drivers on highway 62 as about 20 cars stopped to check out the twister. Following the tornado a violent storm hit the area bringing some much-needed rain, with minimal to no damage reported. According to Mesonet’s rainfall data Brownfield received 0.7 inches of rainfall on Tuesday May 24th. Lubbock recieved 1.81 inches of rainfall. The storm was lightning filled and mild hail was even witnessed. Locals say regardless of the shocking tornado and intense storm the rainfall will help quench our dry soil, and help with farming.

Memorial Day Closings

Memorial Day is a day to remember our fallen in battle. A day to reflect on the sacrifices made by throughout the years to ensure our freedoms and liberties. So many of which we talk for granted. As you enjoy a three day weekend with your family and friends, please take a moment to remember what and who we are honoring on this day. Coach Eric Morin, a US Army Veteran, talked to The Brownfield News about what Memorial Day means to him. "To me, Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made for this country." Businesses closing on Monday include all banks and lending institutions, all federal offices, including the U.S. Post Office, and FSA, all state, county and city government offices, Kendrick Memorial Library and the Brownfield News.
