Brownfield tennis begins season on road

It was a sunny Saturday morning with light wind when the Brownfield tennis team took to the courts at Plainview High to open its 2021-2022 fall season in Class 4A. The Cubs and Lady Cubs began the duel playing doubles and ending in singles. The Cubs and Bulldogs played six doubles matches with three matches of boys and girls, and then played six boys and girls singles matches for a total of 19 points.

City council receives quarterly updates and extends local health order

Mayor Tom Hesse called the Brownfield City Council meeting to order on Thursday morning. The city council began the meeting with quarterly updates from Police Chief Tony Serbantez and the Brownfield code enforcement officer. From there they made a decision on three resolutions, an interlocal agreement, decided to extend the declaration of local disaster due to COVID, and went into an executive session in which they took no action upon returning.

Terry County Judge J.D. Wagner announced his intention to run for re-election in the next primary election, which is set for March 2022. Wagner has been the county judge since taking office in 2011.

Rosetta Odessa Durham Henderson

Services for Rosetta Odessa Durham Henderson, 97, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2021 at Brownfield Funeral Home Chapel with Lawayne Henderson officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Brownfield Funeral Home. Rosetta was born on June 24, 1924 in Poolville Texas. She attended Harmony School and Brownfield. She was a member of the Church of the Living God. Rosetta married the love of her life Judson Henderson on December 21, 1946. She is preceded in death by, her husband Judson; a great- great grandchild, Maddox Romero and 12 brothers and sisters. Rosetta is survived by her son, Lawayne Henderson and his wife Sandra; a daughter, Sharon Murphy and her husband Scott, who was Rosetta’s favorite son-in-law, 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and one on the way.

Bessie Nelson

Bessie Nelson, 92, beloved mother and grandmother was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 1, 2021. She entered into this world on December 8, 1928 in Brownfield, TX to Ernest and Helen Newsom Burnett. She wed Raymond Ladell Nelson (Fuzzie) after he returned from WW II. They had two sons, Jimmy Ladell Nelson of Brownfield and Terry Lee Nelson of Fort Worth, TX . She leaves behind three grandchildren. Tyler Nelson of Fort Worth, TX, Haelee Nelson of San Antonio, TX, and Garett Nelson of Fort Worth, and family friend Brittany Shrimpton and family, of Brownfield, TX, and Garett Nelson of Fort Worth, TX and Terry and his wife Michele Nelson of Fort Worth, TX. Bess attended Brownfield High School and then attended Draughan’s Business school in Lubbock, TX. After graduation, Bess went to work as a telephone operator for GTE until becoming a stay at home mom with her small children. Bess began to work again in the 70’s as her children grew older and started to work as bank teller and bookkeeper at the Brownfield State Bank for a span of over 30 years. Bess had a passion for God and at the age 13 decided she would walk to the Methodist church close to her home and begin her long relationship with the Lord. Bess was actively involved with taking care of young children in the nursery. She also loved to watch all animals and was particular fond of birds, dogs and cats. Bess was a devout Dallas Cowboy fan thru good times and bad. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the Brownfield First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Terry County Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
