The Terry County Commissioners Court met Monday to work through a short agenda. After the invocation and pledges, the court examined and paid bills and read the minutes from the June 8 meeting. The next meeting is set for July 13 at 10 a.m. in the Terry County Courthouse. All four county commissioners, the county auditor and the county clerk were present for the meeting with Commissioner Mike Swain taking lead of the meeting in the absence of County Judge J.D. Wagner.

Funeral services for Orlando DeLaO, of Brownfield, was held at 10 am Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at Brownfield Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Santos Gamez officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 pm — 8:00 pm Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at Brownfield Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Orlando DeLaO, 66, passed away on June 21, 2020. He was born on October 9,1953, in Alpine, TX to Frank and Rebecca DeLaO. Orlando lived in Brownfield his entire life and graduated from Brownfield High School in 1973. Orlando was the proud owner of Orlando’s Texaco for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Raul DeLaO. Orlando is survived by his children Danny DeLaO and wife Jackie of Pottsville, AR; Orlando DeLaO Jr of Dorr, MI; and Regina Essenburg and husband Ryan of Holland, MI and eight grandchildren Micah, Jordan, Lexy, Mercedes, James, Carsen, Ava, Ryan Jr. and Jolie. He is also survived by partner, Cilvia Arguellez, and siblings Frank DeLaO Jr. and wife Pat of Midland; Mercedes Perez and husband Sipriano of Odessa; Adalberto DeLaO of Bridgeport, MI; Yolanda DeLaO of Odessa; David DeLaO and wife Katie of Edmond, OK; Eduardo DeLaO and wife Philly of Katy; Rodolfo DeLaO and wife Erin of Odessa; Raquel Williams and husband Triston of Amarillo and cousin Juan DeLaO also of Brownfield and many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the many friends and family who visited with Orlando during his illness and the expressions of thoughtful generosity sharing stories of our dearly loved father and brother.

Memorial service for Rex Wilkes of Brownfield, Texas were held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Ruby Moultrie officiating. He was received unto the Lord on Thursday, June 18, 2020. Rex was born on August 27, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. His parents were Fayne and Charlene Wilkes of Midland Texas who in addition to Rex had an older son named John Wilkes, who is deceased. Rex graduated from Allen Military Academy in Bryan,Texas, joined the United States Army, deployed to a tank brigade in Germany for two years, and attended Texas Tech upon his return. Rex came to Brownfield to start a new journey and worked at Collins Department Store in 1960. He frequently talked about Mr. Self who taught him how to work hard, treat people with respect, and of course, sell anything in the store. He eventually met the love of his life, Charlotte Hurd, and they were married on March 18th, 1961. Rex and Charlotte had three sons and a daughter – Mark, Brentt (deceased in 2014), Mont, and Rexann. In addition to their spouses, Rex leaves behind his son Rex Lee Wilkes of Kentucky, his close nephew John Fayne Wilkes and his family, thirteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Rex worked in Brownfield for 58 years until heart surgery made him too weak to farm. His father-in-law, Howard Hurd, taught him how to farm at the beginning of their marriage and his brother-in-law, Dr. Howard Hurd II, had tirelessly helped extend his life through cancer and heart failure at the end. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and friends, and was a prolific golfer, often playing thirty-six holes a day. In addition, Rex was a 32nd degree Mason and was always directing projects even through the last few weeks of his life by remodeling their home for Charlotte. He passed away at their home in Buffalo Lakes in her arms with no pain early in the morning. His humor and relentless ability to “visit” will be greatly missed. He was truly one of a kind. We love you Pops!

The much needed rain that Brownfield received on Wednesday night, also came with some destruction. Around 6:25 p.m. a thunderstorm rolled into Brownfield and the southwest portion of the city was pounded by either straight line winds or a small tornado.

It’s that time again in Terry County where you will see a few young ladies selling tickets for the 73rd Annual Terry County Harvest Festival. There will be six in this year’s candidate court. The COVID-19 virus pandemic seemed to slow down until these past two weeks. The debate rages on the increase is due to the governor reopening the state or is it because increased testing. In Terry County recently, there was a 14th case, but the South Plains Public Health District (SP-PHD) had to retract that case when two more samples were taken from the patient and sent to different labs and both came back negative. People in Terry County were happy to hear that, however a week later on Wednesday June 17, another case came back positive resulting in Terry County having 14 confirmed cases.
