Economic Numbers Look Bleak

The COVID-19 virus has become more than just a virus spreading from human to human, it has become an economic plague like no other time in history. According to the US Dept. of Labor, since the week ending March 21, 2020 to the week ending April 4, 2020 the US has recorded almost 17 million initial jobless claims. Men and women all across the US are now feeling the coronavirus punch to their pocketbooks.

Marilyn Schell Fanwell

Marilyn Schell Fanwell, better known as Kitty, passed away on April 3, 2020, at the age of 83. She was born in Macon, Georgia, on September 27, 1936. Kitty grew up in Georgia and Massachusetts, and throughout her life traveled and lived in many states. She loved her family, her children, grandchildren, great grandchild, and also her pets, which she treated as family. Kitty also loved her church and church family, First Baptist Church Brownfield, and was sad the last few years that she was not able to attend as regularly as she would have liked, due to decreasing mobility and health. Kitty loved reading, puzzles of all kinds, crafts, and cooking and baking for family and friends. If anyone needed a cake or pie or a meal, she was always ready to share her gift of hospitality. Kitty is survived by two daughters, Martha Ewing and Terry of Brownfield, Texas, and Nancy Carter of La Quinta, California. Those who know her as “Gramma Kitty” include Sara Lupa and Tim of Austin, Texas; Jeffrey Ewing of Seattle, Washington; Amy Ewing of Austin, Texas; Sierra Doria of La Quinta, California; Tanner Doria of Provo, Utah; Lorie Person and Christopher Mead and great-granddaughter Mallory of South Windsor, Connecticut; Bryan Person of Draper, Utah; and five nieces and nephews. Kitty was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Fanwell; her parents Frances Bittick Schell Whittet and William Schell; her son Kenneth Carter; and her youngest daughter Christi Tiner; and sister Pat Popoli. A memorial service celebrating Kitty’s life and homegoing to be with her Lord and Savior will be held at a later date (yet to be determined). Care and arrangements are under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home, Brownfield, Texas.

Glenn Daine Bearden

Graveside services for Glenn Daine Bearden will be held privately. Public viewing was held on Friday, April 10, 2020 at Brownfield Funeral Home from 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. Daine passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 in Brownfield. He was born on October 28, 1931 in Abernathy to Ruben and Oma (Robason) Bearden. Daine attended schools in Johnson, Plains and Union. He retired after working for 33 years at Cooper Natural Resources. Daine married Evelyn Rose Stephens on September 26, 1953 in Brownfield. He was a member of Brownfield First Baptist Church. Daine was loved by one and all. He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Rose Bearden, parents, grandson, Jonathan Leslie Bearden, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Daine is survived by his daughter, Pamela Whitfield and husband, Mark, of Loop; son, Leslie Daine Bearden and Timothy Lee, of Lexington, KY; grandson, Joshua Mark Whitfield and wife, Malia, of Sultan, WA; two granddaughters, Bethany Denise Whitfield and fiancé, Byron Cypert of Lubbock, Emily Michelle Whitfield of Lubbock; and two great grandchildren, Olin Whitfield of Sultan, WA, Jer’rian Johnson of Lubbock.
