Carrol Fleming

Carrol Fleming passed peacefully Tuesday, March 17, 2020 with his wife Ona by his side in his son’s home. Graveside service were held at 2pm Friday, March 20, 2020 at Terry County Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Steve Carter officiating. Carrol was born November 1, 1933 in Maple, TX to his parents EB Fleming and Ima E. Fleming. He graduated from Three Way High School and went into the Marines from 1954 to 1957. Carrol married his wife Ona on March 5, 1962. He worked for GTE for 30 years and retired in Brownfield where he was also a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church. Carrol is survived by his wife, Ona Fleming; one son, Steve Keene and wife Sandy; one grandson Steven David Keene; one great-grandson, Bladen Keene; brothers, Howard, Robert, Raymond, Roy, Elvis, and Floyd; sisters, Eula Fleming and Lena Faye Blalock.

COVID-19 forcing changes

The coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on the nation. In Texas it has begun to cause issues that most people would not have ever expected. On Sunday, March 15 the Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath told a group of legislators and public school officials that, “likely looking at large numbers of kids possibly missing the rest of the school year.” Also according to the Houston Chronicle, Morath added “it’s marginally optimistic to believe already-shuttered schools in areas with an outbreak will re-open within the next eight weeks.” If that is the case, that would bring those school districts being shut down until the middle of May, or two to three weeks before the original date for summer break.

Shorty Martinez deemed ineligible for General Election

During the canvassing of votes from the Texas Primary election it was discovered that Terry County Precinct 3 Commissioner Shorty Martinez had voted in the Republican primary ballot. Martinez is a candidate on the Democrat side of the ballot for the General Election coming up in November.

On Tuesday morning

On Tuesday morning at approximately 6:50 a.m. a truck accident was called in. The accident occurred about 3 miles south of Brownfield on US 62/385 near Birdsong Peanuts. According to DPS, on wet roads the truck was heading south in the right lane and lost control. The truck began to “fish tale” and slid to the left, turned on its side while going through the median. The truck came to a rest in the right lane and shoulder of the northbound lanes. The driver of the truck was transported to BRMC with unknown injuries.

Karen Elaine Rodgers Morgensen September 18, 1947 - March 12, 2020

Karen Elaine Rodgers Morgensen, 72, of Brownfield, TX, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at her home. She was born in Roscoe Texas to her parents Henry W. Rodgers and Arlie Burklow Rodgers. Rickey and Karen were married on June 7, 1969 and spent 51 years together and raised two children Jay and Jason. Karen is survived by her husband; Rickey Morgensen, children; Rickey Jay Morgensen and Jason Mogensen and his wife Priscilla, grandchildren; Colton, Hailie, Chelsea, Kelly and Leslie, brother; Bobby Rodgers, sisters; Connie Rodgers Cage and Jo Ann Burney. She was pre-deceased by her parents and brother; Jerry Paul Rodgers and sister; Joyce Rodgers Drake. Visitation was held Tuesday, March 17th from 2pm to 8 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 W 19th St., Lubbock, TX 79407. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, March 18th at Resthaven Abbey Chapel.
