Brownfield ISD Board of Trustees met in a regular scheduled meeting via Zoom on Monday, April 20th. The meeting began with the school closure update. Superintendent Chris Smith explained that they will continue to do what they as a school district have been doing. Breakfast and lunches will continue to be handed out until the end of May. Smith spoke about the possibility of rescheduling graduation. He mentioned that the district is planning to have some type of event and they plan on having a “full fledged graduation” for the Class of 2020 once the virus clears up.

On Friday, April 17th, Texas Governor Greg Abbott took to the press stage in what some would consider a great outlook for businesses and the medical industry. Since mid-March, only essential businesses have been allowed to stay open during the COVID-19 virus pandemic, which closed hair salons, barber shops, nail salons, massage parlors, tattoo shops, and piercing services. Other nonessential services or businesses included clothing stores, furniture stores, gift shops, and most other retail stores were also closed. Bars and pubs were shut down completely along with restaurants lobbies and dining areas.

The Brownfield Industrial Development Corporation had a regular scheduled meeting via Zoom on Monday, April 20th. BIDCorp Director Brian Brisendine brought to the board a few items of importance, beginning with the current financial state of BIDCorp. Due to the onset of the COVID-19 virus pandemic, BIDCorp Board of Directors were unable to have the March meeting, so the financial statement for BIDCorp was for February and March.

Every year around Easter grape growers get on edge about a spring freeze. That was the case this past week as temperatures got down cold enough that the vineyards could’ve been ruined. In 2016, grape producers fought off the Easter freeze and thought that they were out of the woods, however like any day on the South Plains weather events can come out of nowhere. That happened on that Easter Sunday in 2016 when a storm rolled in and brought forth a swath of hail, damaging and destroying 200 plus acres of vineyards.

The City of Brownfield held their regularly scheduled city council meeting on Thursday,April 16 at 7:30 a.m. via Zoom. The only agenda item to discuss and consider was the extension, renewal, to amend or cancel the Declaration of Local Disaster - Mayoral Order #1 due to the public health emergency of the COVID-19 virus.
