Read moreThe Brownfield Lady Cubs returned to action Monday night after some time off and got back on track as they defeated the Dimmitt Bobbies 37-33 to get back to .500 in district play. It’s no secret the Brownfield Lady Cubs endure and absolute rough stretch of games as they were without their leader Rhianna Miranda for 3 straight games due to injury. All three games ended up being losses. While Miranda made her return last Tuesday and it did provide a boost to the Lady Cubs it wasn’t enough to overcome the Denver City Fillies. With a 3-4 record in district play and on the verge of being on the outside looking in the Lady Cubs needed to find a way to down the Bobbies Monday night and they did just that.

Read moreThe Brownfield Lady Cubs dropped another tough game to the Denver City Fillies 43-37. It was a great start for Lady Cubs as Jaelyn Molina made the first couple baskets for Brownfield to give them a 4-0 lead. Denver City would answer with four straight points tying the game at 4. ButAmery Pauda would find herself open for a three and would drain it. Denver City however would have an answer as they hit a three of their own. On the very next possession the junior guard Rhianna Miranda who finally returned after missing some games with a foot injury, would knock down another 3 and it would send the Lady Cubs off and running as they would go on a 10-2 run to end the quarter and take a 17-9 lead to the second. In the first four minutes of the quarter both schools would trade buckets. The Lady Cubs did a great job on the defensive end causing turnovers and not letting Denver City have second chances on the boards but were not able to capitalize offensively. Both teams slowed down to end the half thanks to a ton of turnovers. At the end of the first half, it was a 24-16 lead for Brownfield. Coming out of the break Denver City made the move to apply more pressure in the half court and it paid off in a big way as they would own the third quarter outscoring Brownfield 13-3 and would take a 29- 27 lead into the fourth. Denver City would use that momentum from the third quarter to fuel the beginning of the fourth as they would score four more points forcing Brownfield to use a timeout with 4:50 left in the ballgame and down 33-27. Out of the time out you couldn’t have had a better string of plays as Miranda would hit a shot, then Molina would add two more off a putback, and then Miranda once again getting a bucket to create a 6-0 and tie the game at 33 and force the Fillies to use a timeout. Out of the timeout Denver City would knock down the go ahead three, Brownfield would go down on their end and Miranda would get to the free throw line and knock down a pair to make it a one point game but that would be as close as it would get as Denver City would go on to win the game 43-37. The Lady Cubs will be back in action on Tuesday, January 24 th where they will travel to Dimmitt, tipoff is set for 6:15 pm.

Read moreThe Brownfield Lady Cubs were looking to get back on track Friday night against the Muleshoe Lady Mules but were unable to as they lost 62-41. Muleshoe came out of the gates looking good as they played great defensively enforcing a side defense cutting the court into a third, and the Lady Cubs struggled to adjust to it as turnovers were an issue in the quarter. Part of the issue was the Lady Cubs started the game trying to feed Jaelyn Molina inside the paint, but Muleshoe would not allow her to get a touch as they relentlessly jumped in the passing lanes. Muleshoe would capitalize on the turnovers in the first and use it to knock down 3 3’s in the first to get the offense rolling. The Lady Cubs best offense was out in transition when Muleshoe could not get their side defense initiated which is how Brownfield accounted for their 8 first quarter points. By the end of the first quarter the score was 13-8 in favor of Muleshoe. To start the second Muleshoe would go on a 9-3 run courtesy of good defense and finding ways to break down Brownfields defense. The Lady Cubs did have opportunities to get points on the board as they shot 12 free throws in the quarter but only cashed in on two of them. Going into the locker room Muleshoe led 30-14. In the third quarter Muleshoe remained aggressive on defense and never really allowed Brownfield to get anything going. Muleshoe used these turnovers to their advantage once more as they put up 20 points just in the third frame. At the end of the third quarter, they led 50-22. Brownfield never gave up as they continued to play hard, but the defense of Muleshoe proved to be too much as ultimately Brownfield would fall 62-42. Brownfield was led in scoring Alli Coffey who had 10, Kaylynn Fininen had 7, and Kayleigh Saldana and Jaelyn Molina both had 5. The Lady Cubs will be back in action at home on Tuesday night as they begin the second half of district play against Denver City. TipOff is set for 6:15 PM, a livestream of the game can be found on brownfieldcubs.com
