Felipe “Phillip” H. Sanchez

Felipe “Phillip” H. Sanchez, 59, of Brownfield was called home on March 22, 2022. Visitation were held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday March 30, 2022, in Brownfield at the Chapel of Grace Funeral Care Inc. A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. March 31, 2022, at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in the Brownfield Cemetery. Felipe was born on December 15, 1962, in Hondo, Tx to Mauricio and Maria Sanchez. Felipe spent most of his early life as a Farmer and his final days at Brownfield COOP with whom he considered his extended family. Felipe was known for his big smiles, warm hugs, and kindness to everyone. He never met a stranger and will be greatly missed. He was a dedicated husband and father of three sons. Felipe enjoyed the simple things in life and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Felipe is survived by his wife; Rosa Molina, three sons; Samuel Valadez, Ruben Valadez (Christina) and Michael Valadez. nine grandchildren; Adrian, Michael, Natalie, Anastazia, Jasper, Aiden, Talan, Jalen, and Micah, brothers; Tommy Sanchez and niece Claira Sanchez, brother Joe Sanchez, sister Margarette Jackson, and family. Felipe is also survived by several cousins and friends. Felipe is preceded in death by his parents, Mauricio and Maria Sanchez, sister-in-law Dalia Sanchez, and nephew, Matthew Sanchez.

Lady Cubs complete comeback win over Lady ‘Cats

LITTLEFIELD – The Brownfield Lady Cubs softball team scored seven runs in two innings to defeat Littlefield 7-5 on Saturday, March 26th to remain undefeated in District 3-3A. The Lady Cubs looked like a different team from the 10-0 district home opener win on Thursday, and even trailed for the first time in district play. After struggling at the plate for most of the game, the Lady Cubs made the necessary adjustments and began to not only hit the Lady ‘Cats pitcher but find the gap in the outfield. Lady Cubs head coach Loren Phelps spoke on her team’s performance.

Brownfield Tennis host District Tourney

The Brownfield Cubs tennis team had a great first day while hosting the District Tennis tournament. Thomas Brisendine and Lavantae Rishardson won the 3-A District Boys Doubles. Jack Garcia and Kamryn Martinez won District 3-A Mixed Doubles. Rylee Richoleson and Dominique Ussery won District 3-A Mixed Doubles Runner-Up. For a couple of these student athletes this will be their last time to win district as 3 out of the 6 kids are seniors.

Food insecurity for children in Texas is a major concern, especially following the pandemic, explained Mia Medina, a program director for No Kid Hungry Texas. On Monday The Brownfield News was able to sit down and speak with Mia Medina about childhood hunger in Texas. She said, “that as many as one in four kids suffer from food insecurity.” We discussed the various ways that food insecurity can look in various households, but regardless of how food insecurity manifests for specific children “studies show that kids who eat breakfast at school are more likely to excel academically, they’re more likely to be alert, and they’re more likely to have better concentration.”
