Mr. & Mrs. Leon and Cathy Pope celebrate their "Emerald" Wedding Anniversary. Cathy has been putting up with Leon's antics for 55 years, and they're still going strong! Their journey started way back on March 24, 1967, when a young Cathy and Leon said, "I do" in Levelland, Texas. They didn't know what life had in store for them, but it's been an amazing 55 years full of love and laughter. Leon and Cathy have lived in Brownfield for 50 years working and serving in the community. They have 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 3 greatgrandchildren whom they have inspired with their love for each other.

A raging fire

A raging fire was started Thursday March 17th. The fire burned for most of the day on Thursday, filling the air with an odorous thick black smoke. The fire continued to burn overnight and into Friday. The Brownfield Fire Chief also added “really anything can start a fire in dry conditions like this.” Once the cotton burrs were on fire it spread to the large piles of mulch located in a pit near the cemetery. Multiple men and women used heavy equipment such as bulldozers to spread the mulch out, as well as sprayed water in an effort to contain the fire. By Friday morning most of the mulch piles had been turned to ash, but the fire was still going. Justin Pollock
