Judging Livestock - a history

For as long as humans have domesticated animals in order to produce meat, livestock judging has been a critical skill. Butchers – and later, commercial meat packers – had to be able to judge how much meat they could cut out of an animal just by looking at a live animal. Breeders responsible for producing the next generation had to judge how well males would pass on desirable traits and how well females would produce and care for their offspring. Those responsible for raising the animals and feeding them to the point of slaughter had to judge how well the young animals would convert the food that was available into useful meat.

Gas Prices Drop

Good news for Texas drivers: gas prices dropped 1.7 cents in the past week, averaging $2.86/g on Monday. Texas gas prices are 1.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, but 86.3 cents lower than a year ago. Gas prices in Brownfield currently range from $2.73 to $2.79. According to Gas- Buddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $2.45/g yesterday while the most expensive was $3.99/g, a difference of $1.54/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $2.45/g while the highest was $3.99/g, a difference of $1.54/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.29/g. The national average is down 5.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 97.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Leona Margaret Henneke Schertz

Leona Margaret Henneke Schertz passed away on January 9, 2022 at the age of 91. She was born to parents Leo and Josephine Kuhn Henneke in Cat Springs, Texas on November 15, 1930 and was raised in Bernardo, Texas. Leona was baptized into the Catholic faith in Mentz, Tx. at St. Rochs. She attended school in Bernardo. On November 9, 1948, Leona was joined in marriage to Vincent Schertz at St. Roch’s Catholic Church in Mentz, Texas. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Socha Bird and husband Bill, and Lois Howard and husband Donnie; grandchildren: Jennifer Hogue and husband Tim, Chris Howard and wife JJ, Mike Socha and wife Charlotte, Julie Socha, Scott Socha and wife Renee, Sarah Waters, and John Socha; great-grandchildren: Kurt, Allison, Hunter, Holly, Spencer, Abby, Loy, Jacob, Liz, Zach, Maddie, Ava Kate, Claire, Holden, Jaydon, Garrett, Ethan, Dean, Addyson and Merrick; great-great grandchildren: Layla, Hazel, and Harry, and brother Joe Henneke and wife Jocelyn, sister-in-law Cecilia Schertz. She is survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Being a devout Catholic, Leona was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for 64 years. She was very involved in the church being a member of the Altar Society. She worked at Meals on Wheels for 30 years upon her retirement. Leona was a devoted wife and mom to her husband and daughters. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her very proud. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Ronnie Socha, sisters Marie Poenitzsch and Cecilia Luedeke, brothers Aloies and Ebert Henneke, brother-in-law Alois Schertz and sister-in-law Mary Supak. A private funeral ceremony with Father John Ohling will be held at the Brownfield Funeral Home on January 16, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1902 Levelland Highway, Brownfield, Tx 79316.
