County Seeks 8% Tax Hike Amid COVID Disaster

In the Texas 86th Legislative session held in 2019, Texas Governor Greg Abbott put his signature on Senate Bill 2 (SB2) which passed both chambers and is a bill designed to limit property tax growth. SB2 was originally filed and sponsored by Terry County’s District 85 House Rep. Dustin Burrows. The purpose of Burrows being the sponsor and it coming out of the Senate and not the House is because Burrows’ bill was identical to the Senate bill. So the House and Senate filed a “Degree of Association.”

Council Approves Assistance Program For Overdue Bills

People were wearing their masks as the Brownfield City Council met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, July 16. City Manager Jeff Davis asked council members and guests to wear their mask due to the governor’s order given two weeks ago. The council was to have had a full agenda, however the quarterly reports were knocked off the agenda again due to COVID-19 issues. After the invocation, pledges, public comments, and approving the minutes from the previous meeting the council went to work.

New Pima cotton interest could bring cotton fungus to Texas Plains

The Texas Plains cotton-growing region is not known for raising Pima varieties of cotton, but an increasing interest in the crop has Texas A&M AgriLife officials concerned the newcomer will bring with it a yield-limiting fungus that could be introduced to the larger Upland cotton growing area.
