Jerry and Debby Metcalf celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 1, 2020. The couple married May 1, 1970 in Brownfield, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf have two children: Toby and Dawn Metcalf of Sandia Park, New Mexico and Cody Metcalf of Austin, Texas. They have one grandchild, Colby Metcalf of San Marcus, Texas. The couple continues to reside in Brownfield.

On Thursday April 30 at 12:27 p.m. Brownfield Fire and Rescue was called out to Sixth St and Bridges St. for a vehicle that rolled over into a bar-ditch. According to Brownfield Police Dept. Lt. Rene Siller, the driver of the gray Toyota Corolla, was traveling south on Railroad Ave. which has a caliche surface. When approaching the curve at the end of Railroad Ave, which turns into Bridges St, the Corolla began to slide and entered into the ditch where the Corolla then flipped over once. The two occupants denied medical treatment from BRMC paramedics. The Brownfield PD, Fire & Rescue, and the BRMC Paramedics responded to the scene.

This week we focus on the gridiron, football is king in Texas. All three Terry County schools would end up with new head football coaches and AD’s, so the X’s & O’s were going to be different once again for the fourth time in a row. The Cubs struggled early on in the season when they went 0-3 playing two 2A schools and one 3A school. The first loss was to Post 45-14, who were runners-up in Class 2A Div. I. Slaton would be the next to bring down Brownfield, this time by one point 13-12. Next up was Tahoka where the Bulldogs surprised the Cubs handing them a 28-24 loss. Things picked up as the Cubs traveled to Muleshoe and received their first win of the season 27- 16. The Cubs would then take on perennial powerhouse Shallowater losing 34-12.

Good news for the Brownfield Lady Cubs volleyball program as Brownfield ISD has announced and hired their new head volleyball coach. The new coach is no stranger to Brownfield and the volleyball program at BHS, she is a native and former standout player. Mallorie Ellis will take the reins of the Lady Cubs volleyball program as their head coach.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton issued an updated joint guidance regarding the effect of Governor Abbott’s Executive Order GA-18 on religious services conducted by congregations and houses of worship. It recommends health protocols for houses of worship to guard the health and safety of their attendees while serving their respective communities of faith.
