Three Cubs selected to All District

The Brownfield Cubs basketball team finished their season 11-18 overall and 8-4 in District 3-3A. The Cubs made the playoffs but fell to Kermit 63-53 in the Bi-District round of the Class 3A playoffs. After the season, three Cubs were selected to All District and one was selected to Honorable Mention. Devin Hines was named Offensive Player of the Year and joining him on the All District were Jojo Carrillo and Malik Mason. Quavience Busby was selected for Honorable Mention. Head Coach Zayne McPherson spoke on his players being selected to the All District team.

Four Broncos named to All District

The Meadow Broncos basketball team finished the season in the Bi-District round of playoffs with a 62-26 loss to Garden City. Following the season the Broncos had four players selected to the District 7-1A All District team with Paul Franco being named Co-Newcomer of the Year. Joining Franco on the team were Jimmy German, Taylor Caswell, and Wes Woodard. Head Coach Brandon Flores spoke on having his players selected to the All District team.

Cubs falter in fifth inning letting win slip away

ABERNATHY – The Brownfield Cubs baseball fell 13-8 to Abernathy on the road on Thursday, March 17th in what was a competitive game from a young Cubs team. The Cubs started Brandon Anthony on the mound where he went four innings allowing four runs on eight hits. He finished with three strikeouts, no walks, and hit a batter once. Jonathan Romero and Ivan Deleon led the team’s offense with two RBIs each. JJ Martinez, Adriano Mireles, Kelvin Gamez, and Anthony all had an RBI. Head Coach Eric Morin spoke on his team’s performance.

Brownfield tennis takes 8th place at TTCA

The Brownfield tennis team competed at the Texas Tennis Coaches Association Regional tournament at San Antonio over the weekend, and finished in eighth place in the state. The Cubs played in the seventh place game against Ingram on Saturday, March 12th and lost 10-1. Before that game they lost 10-2 to Reagan County. On Friday, March 11th Brownfield opened the tournament with a 10-8 win over Jourdanton but fell 10-0 to Wall in the evening. Head Coach Rich Hammons spoke of the experience of playing in the TTCA and finishing in the top 10 with a young squad.

Total land sales for 2021 surpassed 2020 by 17.8 percent. That was despite a fourth quarter with 953 fewer sales than the same period of 2020.

The Brownfield and Meadow Fire Department

The Brownfield and Meadow Fire Department responded and put out a storage fire on Texas State Highway 137 on Sunday, March 13th at 6:50 a.m. Then again the Brownfield and Meadow fire departments were called to extinguish a fire at the same location at 12 p.m. on Monday March 14th. That time an individual passed away. The fire is currently under investigation, and no more information can be confirmed at this time.

My Turn: Its time for UIL to change playoffs structure

I had the, I want to use the word privilege but will instead say opportunity, to make the six hour trip to Pecos and back to watch the Brownfield Lady Cubs open Bi-District against Anthony. The game went as planned for the most part with the Lady Cubs earning a much deserved win and reaching the Area Round, but what was not planned was the scoring margin difference between the two teams. The Lady Cubs won 108-16, a 92 point deficit between the two playoff teams. On the three hour drive back home, it hit me that the University Interscholastic League really doesn’t award the teams that win a district championship and the district runner ups. Besides getting an award and the right to call yourself the district champion there is nothing else for winning your district. That is where the UIL needs to change its playoffs format for all playoffs bound sports and award teams for winning the district and getting a runner up spot.
