LUBBOCK – The Brownfield baseball team traveled north to Lubbock on Monday night and faced a familiar opponent in Lubbock Christian.

Brownfield faced a heavy task facing two of the top 10 teams in No. 6 Ingram in the first round and No. 5 Groesbeck in the consolation bracket. From there the team recovered and was able to play their tennis and secure a win in the 13th and 14th place matchup.

Standing in the way of the Lady Cubs’ quest to win their first state title since 1988 was Fairfield. The Lady Cubs went on to defeat the Lady Eagles 68-64 to win the state championship.

Of course, this could be different from previous championship games, which were played on a Saturday and in a filled stadium, due to COVID and the winter storms. But it still is a championship game and it was different from my experience of working the state championship games for the New Mexico Activities Association.
